On Friday 16 February alumnus Dion Karagiannis was invited to open the 2024 SAHETI Summer Sports Festival. It was a honour having Dion and his family join us on this special occasion!
Some interesting facts about Dion:
Dion matriculated from SAHETI in 1986 and was a founding member of SAHETI basketball.
Excelling in the sport after school, Dion represented Transvaal and Eastern Province, the latter on two occasions. Dion then played for Johannesburg Spartans in the premier basketball league in the early 90’s and won three championships as a player and then manager.
In 1998 Dion purchased the Pretoria franchise and renamed it Tshwane Suns Basketball club where the men’s division won four basketball national league championships together with a win in the women’s division.
Dion is the chairman for the Tshwane Suns Basketball Club and the director, founding member and COO of the basketball national league.
Dion and Nina have completed a full circle, having travelled the SAHETI journey with their two boys, George and Kosta, who both excelled at SAHETI in sports and academics.
