20 years have passed… I am sure my classmates feel the same as I do when I say we don’t believe it has already been that long since we matriculated. Yet, we find ourselves at our 20-year school reunion after much planning, coordinating, and WhatsApp’s across the globe!
It was a surreal event! Much has changed since our last day at school in 1997. The school has grown and blossomed and I know we are all proud to call ourselves SAHETI alumni! The day started with some snacks, tea and coffee, and everyone greeted each other with happiness and surprise! Although not much may have changed from the outside (so we hope), it was amazing to hear what everyone has been up to since school - new businesses started, successful corporate careers pursued, and more importantly the beautiful offspring that have sprung!
We were so pleased to see some of our teachers who are still so vibrant and passionate about teaching the new generations. Mrs Pitt, Mr Duncan (who came specifically for the event), Mrs Diakoyannis, Mrs Stephanou (nee Lazanakis). It was so lovely to see them all and revisit our original classrooms. Memories came back such as dissecting frogs in the science lab, studying “Fila se Kind” with the animated Mr Kauffman and ploughing through the mountains on our Knysna tour.
Our amazing art classes with Mrs Senekal cannot be forgotten, heated debates in the science lab with Mr Hardy and great laughs in the multitude of musical productions we were honoured to be a part of! There are so many memories I could not even begin to list but that I know are as precious to my classmates as they are to me. Thank you to Mr Taylor who gave us an amazing personalised tour of the beautiful grounds. You are clearly doing a fantastic job as the Headmaster of SAHETI. We even got a chance to see some of our classmates’ kiddies in action!
A particular highlight was a visit from Kyria Soula who was fresh off the plane from a trip in Greece. We thank her for making the effort to come through. She reminded us of how much fun we actually had as a class, as well as of some rebellious stories which I will keep undisclosed in an effort to preserve the integrity of my classmates. A few of us met, that evening, to share stories over dinner and cocktails at Mexican Salsa restaurant in Bedfordview, and I do hope that we continue to keep in touch.
I truly feel that we had a fantastic group of people in our class and look upon my school years with the fondest of thoughts! It is amazing to see how the school has grown, and even greater to see the amazing people that have developed as a result of the passion, love and care of our teachers and parents. A big thank you to Fotoula Avagliano (nee Kyprianou) who motivated and pushed to make sure we had the best possible turnout!
