SAHETI Grade 11 pupil Cale van den Berg has achieved Protea colours for karate and received his first Dan black belt grading. He recently was awarded Southern Gauteng colours, a bronze medal in kumite at the SA Champs and a gold medal again in kumite at the Grove Club championships.

The top performers in SAHETI High School’s annual inter-house gala were: Dimitri Yiannoulakis (junior Victor Ludorum), Federica Scalla (junior Victrix Ludorum), Branko Kostic (senior Victor Ludorum) and Stefania Scalla (senior Victrix Ludorum). The winning house was Apollo followed by Hermes in second place, Artemis in third and Athena in fourth.

Top honours went to Markos Mavrikis (Victor Ludorum) and Alexandra Loffstadt (Victrix Ludorum). Alexandra also took the award for the most outstanding achievement in SAHETI Primary School’s annual inter-house swimming gala. |

A group of SAHETI Grade 12 pupils recently qualified (by achieving an average mark of 80% and above in accounting) to take part in the first round of the national accounting Olympiad, run by the SA Institute of Professional Accountants. Michael Koch, who scored 82% in the first round, qualified for the second round, in which he competed with very pleasing results. Star designers

SAHETI School pupils once again distinguished themselves in The Star’s annual Design-an-Ad competition held recently, with four pupils making their mark as winners or finalists in the various categories. Alexia Kolatsis was awarded first prize in the Grade 10-12 category for her Pick n Pay advert, while Janina Posadowski won second prize in the Grade 4-5 category with her advert for Spar. Grade 10 pupil Christina Koutroukides and Grade 7 pupil Dino Sotiropoulos were both finalists in their respective categories, with their designs which were selected by the advertisers Lenasia Volkswagen and Roman’s Pizza.
The competition provides a forum for pupils to use their creative skills in designing material for well-known brands, while exposing them to the competitiveness of the advertising world. Some 18 000 entries were received this year from schools across Gauteng.
A prizegiving function was held at the Balalaika Hotel to honour the winners; in addition, the pupils’ creations appeared in a supplement in The Star together with other top designs by young artists. Alexia and Janina each received an ipod as well as hampers and vouchers as prizes.

SAHETI’s high school choir received a diploma for their concert programme which was performed at the National Eisteddfod Academy 2011. Over 200 SAHETI pupils participated, winning numerous diplomas, gold and silver awards. The event was held at SAHETI over a two week period in September, and featured participants from several schools in the Bedfordview and Edenvale area, who showcased their talents in the performing and creative arts. |

SAHETI Grade 4 pupils Christopher Bosman-Jansen and Ben Bert were recently selected to be part of the Johannesburg East Area U/10 cricket side for the 2011 season. They went on to play in the U/10 Gauteng Cricket Festival, where Christopher was named bowler of the tournament. |

Prize giving ceremony for SAHETI matrics
SAHETI’s annual matric prize-giving ceremony took place recently, as the last official function involving the class of 2011. A number of academic, cultural and sporting awards were presented to top achievers in the various subjects. For the first time, the “Honorary Citizen of SAHETI” award was presented, as the highest honour bestowed on a matriculant, for demonstrating commitment and loyalty to the school, respect, high standards and uncompromising values.
At the end of the proceedings, all 49 pupils had a turn to ring the matric bell, a symbolic farewell gesture which has become a popular tradition at this event.
SAHETI matriculants Nicole Stephanou and Eleni Bizos are the joint recipients of the award for having achieved full academic colours in Grade 10, 11 and 12.
Nicole Stephanou received the 2011 Dux Scholar trophy at the school’s annual matric prizegiving function recently. She achieved the top marks in the grade for the preliminary examinations. Nicole was also the recipient of the newly introduced “Honorary Citizen of SAHETI” award

SAHETI Grade 6 pupil Victor Spirou recently participated in the Commonwealth / SA Open Chess Championships held at Emperor’s Palace. After eleven rounds, he was crowned the Commonwealth Under 12 Open Chess Champion for 2011, winning the gold medal.
A total of 326 players participated in the B section of the tournament. This included a number of very strong young players from India, some of whom are sponsored and receive coaching from grandmasters in that country. Victor put up an excellent showing, placing an overall third in the B section, ahead of many of these players. He was also the top South African player in this section. |

SAHETI Grade 1 pupil Alexia Joannou has been awarded Central Gauteng colours for acrobatics dance, and has been selected to represent Central Gauteng at the inter provincial acrobatics competition which will be held in Mpumalanga in October. |

SAHETI Grade 7 pupil Alexandra Parris has been awarded national colours for karate. She has been selected for the South African under 12 Unison Kata and Individual Kata Karate team that will participate in the International Karate Championships to be held in Australia in July 2011. |

SAHETI recently welcomed back past pupil and world renowned artist – Candice Breitz – who matriculated at the school 22 years ago. The former deputy Head Prefect and Dux Scholar holds a BA Fine Arts degree from Wits, an MA in Art History from the University of Chicago and an M Phil from Columbia University. Candice has shown her art on the international scene for many years, and recently solo exhibitions of her work have been hosted by galleries and museums world-wide. Her work has also been acquired for permanent collections of several art museums including the Solomon R Guggenheim Museum in New York. She is currently based in Berlin as Professor of Fine Art at the Braunschweig University of Art and is visiting South Africa to prepare for an exhibit of her work at the Standard Bank Gallery in February 2012. |

Brothers Manoli and Dimitri Yiannoulakis were both awarded bronze medals by Gauteng Lifesaving recently: Manoli for the long swim, and Dimitri for the 100m combined race.

SAHETI School’s first swimmers out of the water in the Midmar Mile swim were two pairs of siblings: Manoli and Dimitri Yiannoulakis (both in 27:34 minutes), Federica Scalla (28:53 minutes) and Stefania Scalla (30:53 minutes). They competed in the 14 – 30 years male and female events, respectively. |

SAHETI Grade 10 pupil Mario Neofitou recently won a silver medal for clay target shooting in the junior category of the Association’s central Gauteng region competition. |

SAHETI pupils and brothers Nicholas and Mario Neofitou achieved third and second place respectively in the junior category of the 2011 African Sporting Championships for clay target shooting. The boys enjoyed testing their skills against shooters from all over the world who took part in the four-day event held in Paarl, Western Cape recently. |

Anthea van den Bergh, a grade nine pupil at SAHETI School, summited Mount Kilimanjaro in April with a group of 11 climbers from South Africa and Australia. The chief guide of the expedition was Sibusiso Vilane (left), the first black African to climb Mount Everest and one of nine local mountaineers who have conquered the ‘Seven Summits’, the highest peaks on the seven continents. Kilimanjaro, at a height of 5895m, is the highest mountain in Africa and lies on the border of Tanzania and Kenia. The climbers experienced spectacular views of the mountain and surrounding areas when snow fell during their approach and before summit night. The group was also fortunate that only a few members experienced mild symptoms of high altitude sickness. |

SAHETI Grade 1 pupil Alexia Joannou represented Central Gauteng at the South African Gymnastics Federation’s recent interprovincial competition, where she was placed second out of 33 participants in the u8 age group. She then went through to the South African National Acrobatic Championships, where she came first in the level 1 category, receiving a gold medal.

Ethan Vorster, a Grade 8 pupil at SAHETI School, has been selected to represent Easterns Provincial Baseball in the U14 team, and will be taking part in the interprovincial tournament to be held in George in April. He has been playing for the Red Sox club in Kempton Park for the past two years. |

Soccer star
Katrina Maguire, a Grade 9 pupil at SAHETI School, was recently selected to play for both the U15 and U17 Rand Central district teams with great success. She captains the U15 side, which was runner-up in the SAFA Johannesburg Tournament, and helped the U17 team to win the Johannesburg Mayoral Cup Tournament.
She also plays for Croesus Ladies, which is placed third in the Sasol league, a women’s semi-professional league. Her team recently played a friendly game against Ghana’s U20 women’s team. In addition, she plays in a corporate six-a-side league as part of the ACSA ladies’ team which came first in the Interactive Sport League. Katrina’s dream is to play for one of the professional teams overseas. She would also like to coach young children one day. |

SAHETI Grade 4 pupil Alexandros Coutromanos was recently awarded the Sportsman of the Year award for Judo at the Kano Judo Club. He also received his Gauteng Colours for Judo in the under 39 kg category. |
